Eric, I really appreciate this post since I love to revisit my childhood in the forms of the books I read and the stories I wrote in pencil that are now fading on wide-ruled looseleaf. Recently I did a lot of inward searching because I wrote an essay applying for a scholarship for an MFA in creative writing. By writing the essay I was pleased to find continuity between my child and adult self, and found myself wondering what will come next. As writers, we can't help but reflect our inner lives, and books are integral to our inner lives. Looking back at what I've read, I ponder José Ortega y Gasset's phrase, "Yo soy yo y mi circunstancia" ("I am myself and my circumstance") and wonder how much of who I am today has to do with me, and how much has to do with what I've read, and if there really is a difference.
